POINTS OF DEPARTURE

· Compare de Mare’s performed adaptations of Sondheim’s works with the pieces
in their original forms. What do you feel is gained and lost in these adaptations?
· Considering the fact that Sondheim’s original pieces were set within theatre and
opera, how did de Mare recreate, challenge, or comment on the “theatrical” quality of the original pieces? How does experiencing Sondheim’s works in a musical concert compare/contrast with experiencing those works as theatre or opera?
· Describe how de Mare’s set was constructed. Why do you think he sequenced
the pieces as he did? What effect did it create for you?
